Our Company

Founded in 2001 in the central New York area, Lewtak Pipe Organ Builders, Inc. later relocated to Mocksville, NC, in 2011. At the helm of our operation is Tom Lewtak, whose robust educational background spans both organ building and organ performance. As a streamlined enterprise, Lewtak Pipe Organ Builders distinguishes itself by offering clients an unparalleled level of attention, a distinction often unattainable with larger builders.

Our dedicated team of professional craftsmen diligently works on every project we undertake, ensuring that your investment is allocated exclusively to the finest materials and top-tier labor. Renowned for our meticulous attention to detail, we consider it the highest compliment to be recognized for this aspect of our work. Your satisfaction and the quality of our creations remain at the forefront of our mission.

We consider ourselves fortunate to operate from a facility that would be a dream for any organ builder—a spacious 15,000 square feet filled with clean, naturally lit surroundings set on 15 acres of pristine North Carolina countryside. Our building is thoughtfully organized into four departments: woodworking, finishing, pipe handling, and organ assembly. An aspect of our pride is the shop's commitment to environmental sustainability. Our heating, AC, and hot water systems leverage geothermal technology, the entire building is heavily insulated with open-cell spray foam, and we exclusively illuminate the entire workspace using energy-efficient LED fixtures.

Equipped with this eco-friendly infrastructure, we are fully capable of crafting and rigorously testing even the largest instruments, meeting the demands of our discerning customers. The organ assembly section is particularly noteworthy, occupying a spacious 50’ x 50’ area with a clear span and reaching an impressive height of 32 feet. This dedicated space ensures optimal conditions for assembling and fine-tuning instruments to meet the highest standards of quality and precision.

The Team

Tom Lewtak, educated as an organist with two master's degrees in Organ Performance, found his inspiration to become an organ builder at the age of 16 when he witnessed the construction process of the monumental organ at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Gdansk (Danzig), Poland, by the esteemed German firm of Hillebrand. His journey into organ building continued during his five years at the Academy of Music in Katowice, Poland, where he delved into the intricacies of organ building and design.

Subsequent years led him to Denmark and Norway, where he apprenticed with Carsten Lund Organ Builders of Copenhagen. A pivotal phase of his education involved acquiring voicing skills from Mogens Pedersen, the chief voicer of the legendary Frobenius Organ Builders for over twenty years. Tom's organ building expertise is not merely theoretical but stems from hands-on experience with some of the finest organ builders in Europe.

In his role, Tom assumes responsibility for tonal design, pipe scaling, voicing, windchest, and action design. His artistic vision is manifested through the sound of the organs crafted under his guidance, showcasing a unique blend of expertise and firsthand experience gleaned from working with the best in the field.

Maciej Sztuba holds a Bachelor of Music degree in the field of Theory of Music from the Academy of Music in Gdańsk, Poland. He is married and the proud father of two grown sons.
