Complete Renovation and New Façade

Trinity Moravian Church
Winston-Salem, NC

The original organ at Trinity Moravian Church in Winston-Salem, NC, was purchased by the church in the early 1950s. Built by the Estey Company in 1924, it underwent a complete overhaul by Zimmer & Sons in 1972. While some parts of the Estey organ were retained, such as the console shell and selected pipework, the action was converted to electro-pneumatic, and new windchests were fabricated by Zimmer. The organ served the congregation faithfully for many years, but, as is inevitable with age, issues began to arise.

Our renovation work was comprehensive and included not only the restoration of all mechanical components but also a complete re-voicing of all the pipe ranks. The renovation took place in the early months of 2014, culminating in a dedicatory recital on April 13 of that year.

Renovation work included:

  • Refurbishing the keyboards

  • Refurbishing the pedalboard

  • Cleaning all electrical contacts

  • Addressing electrical issues with stop tablets, pistons, switches, and other controls

  • Extensive restoration of the console cabinet

  • Removal and thorough cleaning of all pipes

  • Cleaning all windchests, both externally and internally

  • Repairing dead or late notes and resolving ciphers

  • Cleaning and reconditioning internal leather valves and pouches

  • Re-leathering all bellows

  • Repairing the swell shutter mechanism

  • Installing a new, custom-made organ blower (imported from Germany)

  • Ensuring the wind-producing system is quiet and reliable

  • Inspecting and repairing all electrical components, including replacing worn-out electromagnets

  • Constructing a new organ façade

  • Re-voicing all pipes

  • Multiple tunings at the conclusion of the renovation process
