It’s called “the king of instruments” and has retained that noble title since Mozart himself referred to the organ with the phrase. The sheer amount of space a pipe organ takes is one of the reasons the instrument carries the tag. The largest organs in the world can have as many as seven stacked keyboards in addition to a pedal board. The organ can have literally thousands of whistles, ranging in size from one-quarter of an inch to pipes 32 feet in length. Add to all this the enormous technical intricacies of all mechanisms built into the organ, and you thus come to realize and begin to appreciate why the building of a pipe organ requires a rare kind of craftsmanship that melds everything together – first to allow the music written for it to come alive through the artist making the music, who then gives it to the congregation or audience.
Long in our society have the world’s most noted organs become the most meaningful treasures of the church, which can further be enjoyed by the world of arts and extended into a community, bringing everyone closer together because of music. Even in an age of ever-improving electronics, no electronic organ can take the place of a refined and custom-built pipe organ. This, indeed, was the kind of organs that music was written for by Bach, Buxtehude, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Vierne, Widor, and countless others over a period of more than 300 years. The visual side of the instrument played an important role as well. The facades of the past for centuries were the source of awe and admiration – a tradition that we try to continue with great conviction.
